Their storey… 

Christy and Riley had known each other casually most of their lives. Their fathers went to high school together and later went on to become business partners. They grew up in separate cities and did not get the chance to know one another until after university. A dinner out with both families in Toronto is responsible for the re-introduction of the couple. After dinner they went for drinks at Senses in the Soho Metropolitan Hotel and the rest is history…they were destined life mates.

Christy planned her wedding as an extravagant four day affair her guests would never forget. The wedding was quite literally a fantasy come true. It started at the family cottage Estate in Muskoka with family and friends relaxing and dining for two days. A Thursday night rehearsal dinner took place in a lounge atmosphere on the dock waterside with dancing late into the night.

The tented ceremony was designed on a dock built out into the water creating the feeling of being on a secluded island. Guests were transported from the ceremony to the reception at Taboo Resort by the oldest operating steamship in North America, The Segwun. Everything from the weather down to the last detail in the wedding reception – glassware, lighting, music, food – was absolute perfection. The wedding was planned and designed by Elizabeth Johnston of eventdecorator.com.

The bride, a Toronto interior designer, admits to “having higher expectations than any planner or vendor would want!” She was blown away with the brilliance of how, Elizabeth was able to understand, interpret and deliver her vision flawlessly. “She literally transformed a plain conference room into the most lavish, romantic, tent-inspired space imaginable.”

“The specific highlights of our actual wedding day that are still topics of conversation are the stunning room draping, table settings including large arrangements on crystal candelabras, lighting, our custom dance floor and the chandeliers hanging over the dance floor. Our favourite element was the jaw-dropping/show-stopping bare set up. We cannot say how impressed we were with the incredible level of service and attention to detail provided by the staff at Taboo Resort. We felt like royalty.”

“It was an extraordinary kick-start to our married lives together, and we are eternally grateful to Elizabeth’s team and every single person who made our wedding happen. It was the wedding of our dreams, and it created memories that will forever be in the forefront of our lives.”

Since 1998 eventdecorator.com has produced hundreds of unique weddings tailed to the individual client. Their full service event planning-design team includes in-house floral design. They have won numerous industry awards and have been featured in magazines across the Globe.

So proud that our small design firm is featured alongside the best designers in the world.   My goal has always been to create stunning designs that are truly representative of our clients.  Adding unique and unexpected touches to the design.  I always say my secret for fresh creative ideas come from my beautiful studio located North of  Toronto.  Our garden inspired studio setting is always inspirational and fuels my creative energy.  It also offers a refreshingly different atmosphere to our clients.  A way to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city, slow down the pace and truly look at all the aspects of their wedding planning and design.

I will be posting more detail shots taken by Richard Emanuel Photography.  I would also like to congratulate Live It Up! Events and Designing Trendz for the beautiful table they created together in this issue. It was at the party held at Designing Trendz studio this past fall I met Grace Ormonde and started on this exciting venture.  She was so down to earth, approachable and excited to share her goals and aspirations.  Someone who truly believes in sharing the talent she finds in the wedding industry.  We also hold the same belief that weddings trends are always changing but weddings do not have to be “trendy”.  Every element of the wedding should be timeless and a true representation of you as a couple.   Visit our website for more inspiring design ideas!

I was fortunate to work with an amazing team that helped turn my design vision into an incredible shoot!  I absolutely love colour and created the entire design around these stunning Mademoiselle chairs from Contemporary Furniture Rentals. Vintage is a popular trend but spicing it up with some vibrant colour makes it WOW!  My friend Jennifer Klementti shot to perfection!  I will share more images from this beautiful shoot over the next week… just too many to choose from.

Have you picked up a copy of our new issue yet? They hit newsstands last week… I am so excited about them both (East and West editions which are totally different!) In both issues, we have an incredible collection of Glitterati Style Files that were styled and produced by groups of event professionals across the country, without any assistance from us here at the mag! This was a first for us – I put out the call for submissions shortly after I found out I was pregnant and OHHHH I’m so happy I did! I loved them all – but we could only choose 15 to include in the mags. Over the next few weeks I am going to roll out the additional photos and features that we couldn’t fit in the mag. I hope you enjoy all of these as much as I do!

The first one I want to share with you (below) focuses on the wee ones at your event!  Yes, those adorable yet busy little people who you love. Though they tend to get the most attention at a wedding (other than YOU of course) they are often the ones that are overlooked when planning out the details of the party. That’s why I was so happy when I saw a whole submission produced just to pay homage to tiny guests!

There are some stories that just need to “share the love” and this is one of them.  Cheers to this amazing couple!

Toronto’s Nancy and Howard Kleinberg appeared on Live! With Regis and Kelly Tuesday morning as part of the show’s search for the “World’s Greatest Love Story.” The Kleinbergs will celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary next month. A Toronto couple, married for more than 60 years, appeared on Live! With Regis and Kelly Tuesday morning as one of the “World’s Greatest Love Stories.”

Nancy and Howard Kleinberg, Holocaust survivors who lived through a Nazi death camp and immigrated to Toronto in 1947, were featured on Regis and Kelly as part of an ongoing Valentine’s week segment.

“I never had the capacity to dream that my destiny is such that I’m going to survive, have a wonderful wife, wonderful family and wind up in New York at a show telling our life story,” Howard Kleinberg told the Star, minutes after appearing live on the American talk show, which is broadcast in Canada on CTV. “It’s unbelievable.”

The Kleinbergs’ remarkable story is not only one of love and commitment, but also survival.

As Jewish teenagers in war-torn Germany, they were both imprisoned in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, which was liberated by British troops on April 15, 1945. On that hopeful day, Howard was clinging to life amid a pile of corpses, when Nancy — then 16-year-old Nechema Baum — saw his body move. “All you saw was corpses, and there was one moving a little,” she said in a pre-taped interview aired on the show. There were no gas chambers at Bergen-Belsen, but more than 50,000 prisoners died due to inhumane treatment, such as a lack of food and medical care.

“The day of liberation. . . found me completely at the end of my strength,” Howard said in the interview after the show. “I was waiting for my maker. However, God, from above, didn’t want me to come up yet.” As he waited to die, Howard heard Nancy’s voice, urgently telling another woman that she saw him move and that they needed to save him. “I said, ‘He’s not dead. If we let him lie here, he’ll die for sure,’” she said. They carried Howard into a nearby abandoned barrack and for two weeks Nancy fed and cleaned him, trying to nurse him back to health.

At the beginning of the third week, when Nancy was not around, Howard made a “desperate attempt” to save his life by crawling to the closest road. He was picked up by British soldiers and taken to a military hospital, where he stayed for the next six months.

“When I came out, the girl that saved me wasn’t around, I couldn’t find her,” he said. Two years later, on May 3, 1947, Howard immigrated to Toronto. The following month, word spread through the city’s community of Holocaust survivors that Nancy had also come over. “Toronto was a very small town in those days,” Nancy said on the show. “Everybody knew each other. He found out the girl who saved his life had arrived.” So Howard found where Nancy lived and surprised her with a knock at the door and a bouquet of flowers.

“I opened the door and almost fainted,” she said. Broke and jobless, Howard said he could not afford to get married at the time. But he got a job in upholstery, saved some money and three years later got down on his knees to propose to the woman who rescued him.

Next month the couple, who live in Downsview, will celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary. “Our romance is still very much alive. There are many times I feel we are closer to each other now than when we were younger,” Howard said on the show.

As part of their prize, the Kleinbergs won a dinner party for their entire family — four children, 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild — at 398 West, a kosher fine-dining restaurant in North Toronto; a professional photographer to document the night; and $3,000 in cash. The Kleinburgs are in competition with five other couples, whose stories are featured on the show all week. Viewers will vote on the couple they believe has the World’s Greatest Love Story. The winner will receive a trip to Bora Bora, in the South Pacific.

Howard could barely describe his feelings in the rushed interview following his live television appearance. “But thank God we are here. We have a wonderful life, and I would advise each one that once you get married, make sure that you don’t argue with your wife, that you love her, that you take care of her, and you’ll live a happy life.”
