nazfilms4 Vendors We Love! | Naz Films, Toronto

If you are a romantic you will be hooked once you view a film by Naz Films.  We love his work and wanted to give you some insight into his company.

You will always remember your wedding day. The moment you married your best friend. The faces of friends and family gathered in one love-filled room. The way your cheeks hurt from all that smiling.

Photographs of the event will help keep your memories fresh, but what about those moments that the camera didn’t catch, the sweet, subtle glances that happened in-between frames?

“Unlike photography, cinematography has the unique ability to add sound, sights and connecting moments,” says Toronto-based filmmaker Nazar Melconian. Owner of NazFilms (and the dreamiest Instagram feed we’ve ever seen), Naz captures his clients’ special day in Super 8mm film, and his artistic wedding videos give us the happy chills.

We caught up with Naz to discuss the importance of wedding cinematography and the particular magic of Super 8 film.

2: Why would you recommend that a couple hire a wedding cinematographer?

Nazar Melconian: Cinematography allows for nuances and details of people and things to be recorded forever. If done right, it can capture and elevate a moment to a feeling.

2: How would describe your films?

NM: My films are best described as feelings and visual memories. My couples book me because they like the warm tones of my films, and the style in which I capture and edit their memories. I film life events close to how we remember significant moments with friends and family: vignettes flicker across the mind’s eye, and you remember how it felt to experience that moment.

2: Why do you choose to work with Super 8 film?

NM: It’s the perfect medium for life events. It’s warm, vintage and has character, and, aesthetically, it’s as close to how we remember our moments.

2: Why do your clients love your films?

NM: Couples hire me because I can capture and tell a film that is under 30 minutes and leave them in happy tears. I pride myself on the ability to capture feelings and compose a film that is all about how and why a couple is in love with one another.

2: What do you offer that’s different from a traditional wedding videographer?

NM: I offer a unique point of view. Most cinematographers make out their couples as movie stars or epic characters in an epic film. My films are smaller, yet larger in heart. They are romantic, chic and contemporary. My couples experience goosebumps, shed many tears and smile as they watch their films.

2: What do you love most about capturing a couple’s special day?

NM: Both the bride and groom getting ready; the anticipation and energy of seeing each other at the ceremony; the rings and vows exchanged. Those are my favorite moments. The portraits afterwards can be super-sweet, as the couple is finally together!

Andreas - This movie that Naz made really captures the feeling of that day. I was the photographer that day, and working with Naz is easy as he understands what photographers need as well when photographing a wedding. Unobtrusive and an observer of the narrative is a good way of describing his style of shooting. His eye and his ability to capture the essence of the people infront of his camera are why I asked him to make a movie of my son’s 5th Birthday a few years ago, which is still on his site.March 6, 2013 – 3:31 pm

Nazar Melconian - Thank you Elizabeth Johnston , Event Decorator for this interview & feature of my work – means a lot coming from you guys – can’t wait for the summer to work with your couples!March 5, 2013 – 9:58 pm

Andreas, Photographer - I’d like to chime in to let brides know what it’s like working with Naz as opposed to a high production “movie star” type wedding videographer. We worked on the above wedding together at the royal conservatory. In fact, I’ve had the pleasure of working with him on about half a dozen weddings over the years. He treats the wedding as an observer, with his own storyboard in his mind of the finished movie edit. As a photographer who shoots close (no telephoto lenses), working with someone who understands how we work is also appreciated greatly.

It’s always nice to see his finished movies, as they really are as close to a “memory” as there is. Soft, blurry, not perfect, yet it’s still a beautiful vignette of the entire day.

Coloured Wedding Dresses

Coloured wedding dresses are trending more in 2013.  When our bride Tracy Roth asked me to help source a wedding dress had hints of blue it got me thinking that picking a wedding dress color no longer means choosing between ivory, white or cream. Brides are walking down the aisle in all colors of the rainbow, whether it’s by adding a touch of color with accessories or going for full on pastels, dark or patterns.  This is a uniuqe way to make a personal statement about who you are!

The idea of a white wedding only became a popular tradition in the 1800s when Queen Victoria married Albert. In eastern cultures, brides traditionally wear red dresses to symbolize good luck and prosperity, as white can have negative connotations (in Japanese culture it symbolizes death).

Pink has become a popular dress pick colour, for its soft and romantic look, as well as light pastels like mint green, yellow and blue.

Some vintage dresses and fabrics have natural and subtle colors. Why not pick a tea-length party dress in a cute colored pattern or your favorite color like this bride did?

Snow Queen Creative | Elegant Wedding Magazine

We are excited to share images of the stunning Snow Queen shoot Event Decorator produced. It is featured in the current issueE.W. TORONTO 2013 COVER 225x300 Snow Queen Creative | Elegant Wedding Magazineof Elegant Wedding Magazine. We invite other bloggers to share our stunning images with credit.

The Snow Queen is a creative collaboration between myself and Sylvia from Paul & Sylvia Photography. When Sylvia first approached me with her Hans Christian Anderson theme I was excited. I had been working on an outdoor Ice style shoot for over a year. The two concepts came together to create the beautiful Snow Queen shoot.

Producing a shoot this size required not only a huge amount of time but a highly creative team. Snow of course was a feature of the shoot and melted as quickly as our shoot date was set. After two cancellations the shoot was moved to my parent’s waterfront property in Muskoka. Set up started at 5:00 a.m. with my husband and son hanging hundreds of pounds of crystal chandeliers between trees. It was a stunning site when the generated started and they reflected off the snow! Ice Culture arrived bringing not only stunning ice sculptures but boxes of snow. Yeah… the Snow Queen was born!! Heidi and I had worked on a unique ice shard design concept that was edgy and dimensional. When they finished installing the 4′ tall cake stand of large ice shards I was wow’d by their talent. Imaging having a cake stand that was 10 times the size of the cake. The custom cake by Whimsical Wedding Cakes was the perfect complement in white and icy blue.

My friend Kim Ironmonger from Valencienne Bridal agreed to create a dress fit for our Queen. She flew in soft white fabric with gold stitching and created a stunning masterpiece. When our beautiful model arrived on the shoot in her gown the scene was complete.

As the remainder of the team arrived the excitement built. Paul and Sylvia from Paul & Sylvia Photography shot from early morning until late night. They captured every detail of the shoot with stunning clarity. Their images really paint a picture of the theme we created. They are a talented and professional team of photographers.

Many thanks to the amazing team of vendors and volunteers who helped me make this shoot a reality. I know you all nearly froze to death but as my Mother always says “The best things in life are the hardest to achieve!”

Our reward for all our hard work was a fresh snowfall that happened early afternoon.

We would love to hear your comments.

2013 Bridal Trends

In December Bridal Tweet reached out to the 16,000 members of this wedding community and asked, “What are your predictions for 2013 weddings?” Here are the highlights from the answers that they received from the experts. After reading this list of predictions, I’m sure that you’ll agree that 2013 will bring forth gorgeous, meaningful moments that we will remember forever!

 1. Bold & Bright Colors. “More bold and bright colors will be used in weddings – from decor, to bridesmaids dresses and even for the bride. I can see bridesmaids wearing dresses with more pattern (i.e. polka dots, stripes or very bright color dresses), mixing and matching bright colors (i.e. yellow dresses with hot pink jewelry and shoes). Besides a bright and colorful bouquet, I can see brides adding color to their jewelry, colorful flowers for hair, colorful shoes and maybe a fun bright color ribbon around the waist.” – Gaiana of Bella Vea 88031367687217618 FUm6qqkF c 2013 Bridal Trends

2. Lace. “In 1981 Lady Diana started a trend with her original wedding dress of bows, puffy sleeves and a large skirt. In 2012, Kate Middleton’s lace wedding dress has made lace very popular and I believe it will be the trend again for 2013. Putting lace on anything makes it look so feminine and elegant and when you add pearls, you have an exquisite design. Lace is also part of vintage weddings that are also trendy. The old is now new!!!” – Alexandra Slawek of Always Alexandra’s Weddings and Events

“Lace can add a delicate touch to any wedding. Wedding dresses with lace are trending big right now. Lace is being used in everything from wedding decor to wedding cards, dresses , even on invitations and Cakes. The wonderful thing about lace is that it can blend easily with any theme and color and looks elegant and classy. It gives an affair a magical touch. Lace brings out the feminine touch. The fact that it can be a big trend is that lace is easily available and comes in wide variety of designs and patterns. Lace is easily dye-able too which makes it easier to adjust with any theme.” – Maria.G of MG Dezigns

 3. Even more DIY touches. “I think one of the big trends to continue and grow even further is the fusion of DIY elements into everything from the ceremony to reception. Think paper or fabric flowers, tissue garlands, favors, confetti and more. With sites like Pinterest becoming more and more popular and brides wanting their big day to reflect their personalities versus traditional styling, I think we will continue to see the growth of DIY projects being incorporated. Of course while many brides will want this look, they may want to consider hiring a stylist to assist in bringing this look together because some of the DIYs can be time intensive.” – Melissa of Styled by Melissa Brown

4. Cakes with Ruffles. “There will be more cakes with ruffles! I personally think they are simply elegant!” – Anne-Laurie Placide of Glamorous Elements.

Pink and White Ruffled Wedding Cakes 2013 Bridal Trends

5. More creative, eclectic, non-traditional and exclusive venues. “There will be an increase of such as farms and wineries on the outskirts of towns, and creative urban settings such as antiques warehouses, art galleries, and photography studios such as our vintage Chicago loft studio.” – Sarah Toulouse, Wedding Creativo Photography

“I’ve noticed my clients are asking and booking more creative, eclectic, and non-traditional venues for their wedding day. Although the beach, hotel, and woodsy outdoor venues have been super popular, I think that we will see more unique venues for brides and grooms in 2013, such as museums/art galleries, restaurants, rooftops in downtown areas, vineyards, industrial-like buildings, private homes, and more.” – Elvira DeCuir of 3D Memoirs

“To have an exclusive venue all to yourself is a luxury. For most people, it is most likely a luxury that you can have only once-in-a-lifetime. Why not take advantage of the occasion of your wedding to have at your disposition an entire castle, villa or resort where you are served and pampered? This allows you to move around in absolute tranquility in “Your House”. - Italy Prestige

exclusivity 2013 Bridal Trends

6. Unique reception entertainment. “In 2012, we saw fire eaters, mariachi bands, and elaborate custom photobooths. One couple opted for Nashville’s premiere dueling piano players instead of the typical band or DJ to provide music and entertainment for their reception. Couples will continue to look to non-traditional reception entertainment to create spectacle and ensure that their wedding is talked about and remembered for a long time to come.” John Yates of Celladora Wedding Photographybig bang nashville wedding 800x534 2013 Bridal Trends

7. Victorian luxury, flapper style, and art deco. “By that I mean, rich colors (i.e. aubergine, scarlet, royal blue) or all bright whites, thick velvet, chunky crystal, candelabras, lots of lace, fringe, graceful dresses, hairpins and tiaras. All this will be done with an elegant simplicity. It won’t be themey or tacky. Weddings will have a sense of hipness layered with rich textures and an air of sophistication. I base my prediction on a few things:

  • Downton Abbey‘s popularity will continue to grow especially with a wedding in season 3.
  • The remake of The Great Gatsby is coming out in 2013.

As we slowly climb out of our recession, the comfy barn wedding will morph into a more sophisticated affair.” – Maria of A Sweet Start

“Weddings will be really cinematic and vintage inspired” – Tanya of Bowties and Butterflies

“I think the Art Deco trend is going to be big for 2013. It has elements of the vintage trend that was so big in 2012, such as cut glass decorations, lace and pearls. But it’s more formal with its old Hollywood vibe – eg. satin, fine jewelry, fur accents, feathers. It’s great for a more formal setting because the color scheme is often white, black and gold although silver is a great choice too. As a cake designer, I’m definitely inspired by Art Deco/Great Gatsby-esque decor and fashion and it’s showing up in my cake designs for an upcoming bridal show.” – Ann Yankowsky of Style Cakes vintage 2013 Bridal Trends

8. Bohemian. “Weddings will be really delicate, floral, natural and bohemian influenced.” Tanya of Bowties and Butterflies

9. Braids. “We see braids in every hot summer movie and we think they will be big for wedding hair styles in 2013.” Sandra Johnson of Apex Tent and Party

A little bit about this artist…

Laura K Invitations

people know my last name!  Also, clients and industry colleagues refer
to my invitations as ‘Laura K invitations,’ so the name just made sense.”
